Tailem Bend railway carriages up for grabs
In coming months, people will get the chance to have their own railway history when carriages kept at Tailem Bend will be open for tender.
The Coorong council plans to dispose of six carriages which have sat near the old Tailem Bend railway station for years.
Known as the accident train, the disposal will include a range of both flat open-sided and enclosed carriages.
Mayor Paul Simmons suggested the carriages might interest individuals, groups or organisations wanting a piece of rail history, for restoration or as a static display.
“These carriages offer a connection to rail history; however, they are surplus to council’s needs and would require a significant investment towards restoration and suitable relocation,” he said.
Mr Simmons said the council would retain one carriage and hoped to restore and use it in the future.
People interested in tendering for the carriages will need to observe specific requirements, such as obtaining approvals from rail authorities and having the capacity to safely remove and transport the carriages.
Before the tender process begins, people are welcome to provide feedback on the planned disposal of the assets.
Feedback must be received by 5pm on September 29.
